A bag of chips every day: good idea?

Are you one of those people who needs to eat a bag of chips every week or even every day?
Then you are not alone! According to a scientific study, eating chips is just as addictive as drugs because chips induce the same addictive feeling.

Chips consist of healthy ingredients: potatoes and oil. But it's mainly their preparation that's unhealthy. Chips are prepared at a high temperature, either in oil or fat. Due to this high temperature, some of the fat turns into trans fat. And these are the most unhealthy fats!

In recent years, chips have contained considerably fewer 'bad' fatty acids than before,  but chips are also rich in calories: 100 grams of chips contain about 500 kilocalories. For comparison: 100 grams of boiled potatoes contain 80 kilocalories.

Did you know?

All chips are salty chips
In the production process of chips, salty chips are always used as a starting point. Then a flavour is added (paprika, cheese, ketchup, etc.) or extra salt is added to salty or natural chips. So don't be fooled by the word 'natural'. This is just a marketing trick to make it sound more natural.

Sunflower oil?
Most brands put '100% sunflower oil' in large letters on the packaging. This oil has a good name because it's rich in omega 6 fatty acids. But chips that are fried in a mixture of oil - for example a mixture of rapeseed, sunflower and corn oil - are often tastier and also contain fewer calories.

Less acrylamide than in coffee
In terms of acrylamide, chips are actually not the worst choice. Acrylamide is a harmful substance that is formed during dry preparation methods: baking in the oven, roasting or frying. This substance is found in many industrial food products, including chips. But there's even more acrylamide in fries and even more in coffee!
