UN warns of imminent disaster
The UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, has warned that the Middle East “is on the brink of imminent catastrophe”.
She stressed that “there is no military solution to the conflict,” amid escalating fighting between Israel and the Shiite militia Hezbollah.
“As the region stands on the brink of imminent catastrophe, it cannot be said enough: there is no military solution that will make both sides safer,” Hennis said, with a brief message posted by her office on X.
Tensions have escalated in recent days, particularly after a wave of coordinated explosions on Hezbollah’s communications devices, which killed some 40 people and injured some 3,000. Much of the international community, including the United Nations, has expressed concern about the indiscriminate nature of the attack.
