UN Warning: It's a vicious spiral
The head of the UN World Food Programme in Lebanon, Matthew Hollingworth, said Lebanon was facing a very difficult situation and there was “extraordinary concern” about the country’s difficulty in obtaining food.
Several agricultural areas have been destroyed by Israeli bombardments and many others have been abandoned by displaced families, which could lead to food shortages.
According to UN figures, around one million people in Lebanon are in need of vital assistance. Mr Hollingworth said thousands of hectares of crops in the south of the country have been burned or abandoned, crops will not be harvested and food will rot.
“In terms of agriculture and food production, Lebanon’s ability to continue to feed itself is extremely worrying,” he said.
