Sweden to further boost military budget
A Swedish parliamentary committee has recommended measures to strengthen the country’s armed forces that would add more than €5 billion to the national defence budget by 2030.
The move would increase spending to 2.6% of GDP, surpassing NATO’s 2% target.
The Swedish Defence Committee said the Scandinavian country must respond to new conditions, citing rising tensions in Europe following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Sweden’s recent integration into the NATO military alliance.
The committee recommends additional military brigades and naval personnel, an increase in the number of conscripts trained each year and the creation of Sweden’s first rocket artillery unit.
“The deteriorating security situation, combined with Sweden’s obligations as an ally, requires greater ambition in military defence,” the government said on its website.
