Sergey Lavrov believes fighting for victory with nuclear weapons is "senseless"
Sergey Lavrov said using nuclear weapons at all costs to win the war was "senseless".
Russia's foreign minister launched a series of criticisms against the West during a speech to the United Nations on Saturday, also pointing out that Russia can use its nuclear arsenal in the event of a serious threat.
The top diplomat argued that the West was using Ukraine as an excuse "to defeat" Moscow strategically.
"I’m not going to talk here about the senselessness and the danger of the very idea of trying to fight to victory with a nuclear power, which is what Russia is," he said.
Earlier this week, Vladimir Putin hinted that he had lowered his conditions for deploying his nuclear arsenal in Ukraine as Kyiv seeks US approval to use their weapons directly on Russian soil.
This week, Joe Biden announced that $2.7 billion in new military aid would be allocated to Ukraine, but this will not include long-range weapons, something Volodymyr Zelenskyy had been hopeful to obtain for months.
Russian nuclear warheads have been stored in Belarus since last year.
