'Russians capture civilians and execute them mercilessly'
On Thursday, police in the Kharkiv region, which has been under siege for several days, said the Russian army had captured about 40 civilians (mostly elderly) and used them as "human shields" to protect its command center.
"And we know that the Russians cynically shot an elderly man who was trying to flee into Ukrainian-controlled territory," assured the head of the regional police investigation department, Serhi Bolvinov.
These "human shields" were said to be protecting a Russian military headquarters in the city of Vovchansk. These statements add further weight to statements made by Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko, who reported that civilians had been captured by the Russians and quickly executed, Le Monde reported.
According to police chief Bolvinov, the hostages were mostly elderly people.
This information could not yet be verified and Russia has not yet responded.
