Russian attack brings nuclear power plant to brink of blackout

Ukrainian Energy Minister, German Galushchenko, denounced that the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant was “on the verge of a blackout” due to a new Russian attack in the vicinity.

Although Russia retains control of the plant, the minister said the attack had cut off one of the plant's two main power supply lines.

Disconnecting the other line would suspend operations, jeopardize safe operating conditions and increase the risk of accidents, the minister warned in a message on his Telegram account.

“Such actions by the aggressor country pose a threat to the radiological safety of the entire region, and the return of control of the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant to Ukraine can guarantee its safe operation,” he added.

No comment from Moscow, but in this kind of situation it usually accuses Ukrainian forces of bombing the plant in an attempt to regain control by force. One thing is certain: the situation around the plant is extremely unstable. A few months ago, the International Atomic Energy Agency had already warned of the risk of a major incident.
