Russia will respond ‘appropriately’ to attacks with US long-range missiles
Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said on Monday that Russia will ‘react appropriately’ if the Ukrainian army attacks targets in Russia with US long-range missiles.
According to Zakharova, the use of those long-range missiles would ‘directly involve the United States in the conflict’. It would also involve a ‘radical change in the essence and nature of the conflict’, according to the spokeswoman.
US media reported that US President Joe Biden would have authorised Kiev to deploy long-range missiles, with a range of 300 kilometres. The report has not yet been confirmed by the White House.
Josep Borrell, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, already said he hoped EU countries would follow the US example. At the G20 summit in Brazil, French President Emmanuel Macron called the US move ‘a good decision’, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, however, still does not consider it appropriate to deliver Taurus missiles to Ukraine.
