Russia takes step towards use of nuclear weapons
‘Russia will change its rules on the use of nuclear weapons in response to the Western escalation of the war in Ukraine.’ This was said by Sergei Ryabkov, deputy foreign minister, in Russian state media.
Currently, Russia is allowed to use nuclear weapons in the event of a nuclear attack by an enemy if a conventional attack threatens the existence of the state. That is so stated in a 2020 decree by President Vladimir Putin. But now Russia's deputy foreign minister thus reports that the threshold for the use of nuclear weapons will be lowered ‘to sober Russia's enemies in the West’, Russian state media reports.
