Real threat: "Poland, Finland and the Baltic States must be protected"
German Foreign Minister, Annalena Baerbock, has defended the stationing of US long-range weapons in Germany as from 2026, as a deterrent against Russia.
"What protects us today is that we invest in our own security and strength, in the EU, in NATO and in Germany," she wrote in an op-ed in the tabloid "Bild", Germany's most widely read newspaper.
"And that includes the decision to station US long-range weapons systems. Because we need a credible deterrent against Russia, so that it doesn't dare to attack," the Green minister of the German government defended.
Baerbock stressed that it was not only Germany that needed to be protected, but also Poland, Finland and the Baltic states, which border with Russia and are already the target of Moscow's "hybrid" attacks.
