Putin's great battle
Over the past week, Russia has been amassing forces in what appear to be preparations for a decisive push into Kursk Oblast.
Recent advances by Russian troops in Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv oblasts show that Ukraine now faces a new challenge: defending positions gained in the August cross-border offensive.
President Volodymyr Zelensky said on November 11 that Ukrainian troops were holding their own against nearly 50,000 troops in Russia’s Kursk Oblast.
Russia, spared from the drawdown of troops leading assaults in eastern Ukraine and reinforced by more than 10,000 troops from North Korea, will likely attempt to launch a major offensive from the north, which may not stop at the now-nonexistent border.
In early November, Ukrainian officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told The New York Times that an assault involving these troops would take place very soon.
