"Putin has threatened us with a nuclear attack about 110 times"
Guillaume Ancel is a French writer and former officer, specializing in international politics. On the set of Quotidien on the TMC channel, he discussed Vladimir Putin's new nuclear threat.
Vladimir Putin wants to revise the rules for using nuclear weapons. For Guillaume Ancel, it's a bluff:
"Putin has threatened us with a nuclear attack about 110 times since the start of the war. We can no longer take him seriously because it's like crying wolf. There comes a time when no one believes him anymore. And unfortunately, when the wolf comes, we'll be surprised."
"But in this case, for the nuclear weapon, Putin has already been informed by the United States that if there is any opportunity to use a nuclear weapon, even the so-called tactical ones, which are limited and are just thousands of times more powerful than the most powerful weapon that is used nowadays, the reaction would be to destroy all the Russian weapons that are in Ukraine with conventional means."
And he concludes:
"Putin knows that if he uses a nuclear weapon, he has lost the war. Why? Because there is no nuclear war. Nuclear is a weapon of mass destruction, it has never been a weapon of war. So his threat is absolutely not credible, unless he's a candidate for the suicide of his country, which I don't believe he is."
"I don't think Putin, who is a particularly paranoid man and who takes absolutely crazy security measures to protect himself, wants to commit suicide with the use of a nuclear weapon. Even China, which has very ambiguous support for Russia in the war in Ukraine, has told him that it would be inappropriate to use this type of threat."
