Putin expects US help
The Kremlin hopes that Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election will give Vladimir Putin an advantage in the Ukraine conflict and on the international stage.
The Republican billionaire defeated his Democratic opponent, Kamala Harris, and will return to the White House in January, following his previous term from 2017 to 2021.
With the Ukraine conflict nearing its third year and Russia increasingly isolated, Trump’s return could provide new momentum for the Russian leader, as several officials in Moscow revealed to the media outlet VPost.
During his campaign, Trump asserted that he could bring an end to the conflict between the two nations, partly due to his strong relationships with both leaders.
Trump will inherit several sensitive issues upon re-entering the White House, including the Ukraine conflict and ongoing tensions in the Middle East involving Palestine, Israel, Iran, and Lebanon.
“Until the inauguration, we will keep advancing [in Ukraine]. It would be good to reach the administrative borders of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions by January, and then we will decide what to do with Kherson [the Kyiv-held capital of Ukraine's Kherson region, which Russia partially occupies].” a Russian government official said.
“As soon as Trump takes office and forms his team, then we can agree to start consultations. It will be convenient for him to negotiate. Right now, there's no one to even come to Moscow for talks, no one to talk to,” added another Russian official.
