Putin adjusts nuclear doctrine in response to U.S. missiles
The Kremlin has already created a new legal framework for the use of nuclear weapons. Moscow did so fleetingly in response to the U.S. allowing Ukraine to hit Russian targets with American long-range missiles.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree to amend the nuclear doctrine. From now on, it will also be possible for Russia to use nuclear weapons against countries that do not have nuclear weapons of their own, if they have attacked Russia with the support of another nuclear power. That was not allowed before, and so Putin now changed those rules himself.
Protecting neighbor Belarus
The modified Russian nuclear doctrine states when the country is considering using nuclear weapons. This is now possible, for example, in the event of large air strikes with conventional weapons, such as missiles. But also in the event of a massive deployment of enemy aircraft and missiles against Russian territory. And remarkably: also in the event of an attack on ally Belarus.
