Nuclear threat: Russia’s chilling warning to the US
Russia has threatened to resume nuclear missile tests if the United States does the same, according to Sergey Ryabkov, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister.
As reported by the Russian news agency TASS, Ryabkov made this statement during a national television interview, despite the fact that Washington has never suggested a return to nuclear testing.
In recent weeks, several high-ranking Russian officials have raised the nuclear threat as the war in Ukraine drags on, with tens of thousands of soldiers lost on both sides over the course of more than two years.
Sergey Ryabkov said that Russia would not hesitate to respond to any form of Western provocation.
Regarding Russia’s nuclear doctrine, he added: "As defined and formulated by the president of the Russian Federation, we can conduct such tests, but we will not conduct them if the United States refrains from such steps."
The United States has not conducted nuclear weapons tests since 1992. Both countries signed the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty in 1996, but neither has ratified it.
Russia has also moved some of its nuclear warheads into Belarus.
