North Korea executes ‘20 to 30 officials’ after floods
North Korea has executed 20 to 30 officials for failing to prevent damage caused by heavy flooding in late July. This was reported by a South Korean television channel.
Flooding in northwestern North Korea after heavy rain in late July claimed possibly 1,500 lives. North Korean leader Kim Jong-un initially praised the army for saving lives, but later criticised its lack of preparation for natural disasters. He also fired the governor of the affected province and the minister of social affairs.
In addition to being held responsible for the disaster, the executed officials were also accused of corruption and dereliction of duty. The executions, according to South Korean TV channel ‘TV Chosun’, were allegedly meant to prevent civil unrest.
