New country on the verge of lending Ukraine a helping hand
Pyongyang deploys soldiers to support Russia? South Korean President, Yoon Suk-yeol, is ready to retaliate.
Last Thursday, Yoon Suk-yeol declared that he wouldn't rule out the possibility of sending military equipment to Kiev. He also spoke of “adjusting the policy” of his country in this area.
Seoul is a major arms exporter and, on several previous occasions, the government had raised the possibility of delivering weapons directly to Kiev. Until now, the South Korean leader had refused to do so, citing a long-standing national policy that prevented him from supplying arms to countries engaged in active conflicts, reports France 24.
“Now, depending on the level of North Korean involvement, we will gradually adjust our support strategy in several stages", Yoon Suk-yeol told a press conference. He added that this meant “we don't exclude the possibility of supplying weapons”, stressing that “if we engage in weapons support, we will give priority to defensive weapons”.
According to Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky, some 11,000 North Korean troops have already been dispatched and deployed in Russia's Kursk region.
