Luxembourg ready to take up arms
Luxembourg has suggested the creation of a European army, given the risk that Donald Trump’s return to the White House could weaken NATO and the security of European nations.
In a recent speech, Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden proposed this idea, specifying that such an army should be integrated within NATO and work in cooperation with the United States.
"Russia’s unacceptable invasion of Ukraine has been a wake-up call," he stressed.
European leaders are increasingly concerned about NATO’s future, as Donald Trump may choose to withdraw from the organization, cutting off funding. He could also decide to end military aid to Ukraine.
Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the idea of a European army has gained traction, especially with French President Emmanuel Macron who has advocated for greater European autonomy.
However, the Baltic states fear that establishing this military entity could weaken NATO, a concern echoed by the United Kingdom, which has consistently opposed the idea.
Luc Frieden envisions taking a step-by-step approach, initially consulting countries that might be interested in participating.
