“Hunt for men”: Ukrainian army causes scandal
After more than two years of war, the Ukrainian army is short of personnel, equipment and human resources. In order to replenish its ranks, it has adopted a new law intended to intensify the mobilization of volunteers.
An investigation has just been opened, at the request of the Ukrainian Commissioner for Human Rights, concerning the suspicious death of a man who, according to his relatives, was beaten by officials in charge of military mobilization, reports La Dépêche. On September 6, Friday, the recruitment center in Transcarpathia, in western Ukraine, denied and rejected all the accusations.
Commissioner, Dmytro Loubinets, announced on Telegram that investigations for “bodily harm…by negligence” had been launched. He specifies that in the border region of Transcarpathia, “the number of plants against illegal actions” of military recruitment centers “has increased”. Since the beginning of the invasion, Transcarpathia has become a key crossing point for Ukrainians who want to avoid mobilization and leave the country.
Those in charge of recruitment regularly find themselves under fire for scandal, and accused of abuse and violence. Some media outlets do not hesitate to denounce a real “manhunt”.
