Greece prepares for war
On Thursday, Greece announced an overhaul of its armed forces. Government spokesman, Pavlos Marinakis, announced that the creation of an air defense system, complete with anti-aircraft and anti-drone dome, was among the most significant changes.
Enhanced cyberwarfare capabilities are also on the agenda. Pavlos Marinakis indicated that the country would acquire “a satellite for the needs of the armed forces, for the use of secure satellite communications and for the use of a warning system”. According to him, this is “the most important national defense reform ever undertaken in the history of the Greek state”.
Defense Minister, Nikos Dendias, also announced that the Greek army would be integrating 4 separate drone systems, abandoning its old weapons and merging some of its units. He added that, in order to save funds, the government would be abolishing 130 military barracks.
Greece, a member of NATO, devotes almost 3% of its gross domestic product (GDP) to defense. According to 20 Minutes, this is one of the highest rates among its European partners. The country cites, in particular, long-standing tensions with Turkey.
