Full on war in the Middle East?
"We are on the brink of total war," an alert issued by Josep Borrell, head of EU diplomacy. Nearly 500 people died in Lebanon on Monday. And Israel has been under rocket fire since Tuesday morning.
In a week, the situation has become critical in southern Lebanon. The operation by the Israeli secret services was the beginning of a large-scale attack on Hezbollah positions. While the Israeli army is still operating in the Gaza Strip against Hamas, with thousands of victims. On the Lebanese side, large-scale bombings have been carried out by Israel.
Responses
The Israeli authorities indicate that these strikes were "targeted against terrorists". The Lebanese Ministry of Health indicates, however, that they have caused 492 deaths, including 35 children and 58 women. There are also 1,645 injured. In response, Hezbollah responded by launching a hundred rockets from southern Lebanon towards Israeli territory on Tuesday morning. The majority were reportedly intercepted, causing only material damage.
The UN on the front line
The United Nations will meet in general assembly today to discuss the situation in the Middle East. There is a real risk of a conflagration, especially since Iran is an ally of both Hezbollah and Hamas. France has also requested an urgent meeting of the Security Council. It's difficult to predict Iran and other Middle Eastern countries' reactions, but the risk of a conflagration is real. With a large-scale war.
