"70,000 Russian soldiers killed since conflict began in Ukraine"

According to calculations by Russian website Mediazona and the BBC, some 70,000 Russian soldiers have been killed since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

This estimate is based on official communiqués, obituaries and observations of new graves: these bring the number of Russian soldiers killed to exactly 70,112 Russians killed. This does not include the figures of militias from the annexed regions of Donetsk and Luhansk.

However, the actual death toll may be much higher, possibly around 120,000, as estimated from analyses of notarised records.

The Kremlin does not provide official figures on the number of soldiers killed and wounded.
