Building collapses in earthquake: contractor gets 865-year jail sentence

A Turkish general contractor, Hasan Alpargün, has been sentenced to 865 years in prison for his role in the collapse of a building in Adana during the 6 February 2023 earthquake. This reports Turkish state news agency Anadolu.

The building collapse killed 96 people. The building, built in 1975, collapsed despite Adana being largely spared the worst effects of the quake. Experts identified serious construction flaws, including poor supporting columns and inferior concrete.

Alpargün fled after the earthquake, but later surrendered. His defence that the construction had been approved by the authorities was rejected. This verdict is part of a wider prosecution of contractors of collapsed buildings.
