Baby drowned in North Sea
A baby died on the night of 17-18 October when an overloaded boat sank off the coast of Wissant, in Pas-de-Calais.
The boat contained migrants trying to reach England illegally. 65 people were rescued, but searches found a baby unconscious. No further help could be provided: the baby had died. The Boulogne-sur-Mer public prosecutor's office opened an investigation.
In 2024, 52 people did not survive their attempt to cross the Channel. The boats, often overloaded and dangerous, put migrants at great risk. Since the beginning of the year, more than 26,000 migrants have successfully reached England.
