United Nations secretary general visits Putin
UN chief António Guterres has arrived in the Russian city of Kazan to attend the summit of the BRICS group.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is urgently seeking allies against the West. He is doing so, among other things, at the BRICS summit starting in Kazan, Russia.
More than 20 world leaders are meeting there and it is the first major summit in Russia since the start of the war in Ukraine.
It is the first time in more than two years that the UN Secretary-General has visited Russia. On Thursday, UN chief António Guterres will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin and they are expected to talk mainly about the war in Ukraine.
BRICS stands for the alliance of the world's emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The group aims to promote development and cooperation. Earlier this year, the club expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran. And there appear to be many more countries in the queue to join the BRICS. Among them is Turkey, for example.
