Outraged, Putin accuses of cheating

Russia has denounced "irregularities" in the vote count during last weekend’s presidential elections.

The Moldovan people narrowly voted in favor of a future membership in the European Union, while President Maia Sandu topped the first round.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that anomalies were detected in an election that was closely monitored, as Chisinau had urged Moscow not to interfere in the process.

Maia Sandu came out ahead in the first round with 42% of the vote, but she will face Alexandr Stoianoglo, who secured 26% of the vote and is notably backed by Russia.

The Kremlin spokesperson also called on the president to provide evidence following her claims of foreign interference.
