'Chinese tried to wiretap Trump and Vance'
US authorities report that cybercriminals with ties to China may have tried to break into the phones or networks used by former President Donald Trump and his running mate, Senator JD Vance. This has been confirmed to CBS News by a number of sources familiar with the matter, and the British BBC is also reporting on this case.
The sources said the Trump-Vance campaign was warned that the phones used by Trump and Vance may have been the target of a broader cyber attack. People associated with the Harris-Walz campaign were also targeted, by the way, BBC News stresses. It is still unclear how much information and what messages were compromised.
A joint statement from the FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said the U.S. government is investigating “unauthorized access to commercial telecommunications infrastructure by actors affiliated with the People's Republic of China.”
They said that after the “malicious activity” was identified, the agencies “immediately notified affected companies, provided technical assistance and quickly shared information to help other potential victims,” adding that the investigation was ongoing.
