Letting your child win: a bad idea?

You've probably experienced it: your child gets angry or has a crying fit because he lost at a game. Or are you someone who lets your child win all the time?

Young children adjust the rules of the game as they see fit. This is nothing to worry about because it suits their age. It is also okay to let very small children win. They cannot yet handle losing well.

Once your child goes to school, however, it is advisable to let them win occasionally. Go over the rules beforehand and tell them that you will stick to them. When your child loses, he will learn that a game sometimes turns out differently than he hoped. So don't immediately expect him to respond well to it. Losing is something a child has to learn. By the way, children up to the age of 8 have a hard time regulating emotions.

Therefore, as a parent, set a good example by showing your emotions when losing. “I wanted to win, but it didn't work out. Maybe next time it will work out.”

Be sure to always choose games that are age-appropriate for your child. Games that are too difficult will only cause more frustration.
