Scientists say global warming is leading to more floods

Global warming is causing more severe flooding, scientists have warned.

While storm Boris recently ravaged Poland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Austria and Italy, causing the deaths of 24 people and billions of euros in damage, the World Weather Attribution now argues that the intensity of the flooding has probably been exacerbated by global warming.

Scientists from the research program have warned that this type of episode, although extremely rare, could occur twice as often in the future if average temperatures rise by two degrees.

“This is certainly what we will see more and more of in the future,” said Friederike Otto, senior lecturer in climate science at Imperial College London and co-author of the study.

“[It's the absolute signature of climate change [...] that records are being broken by such a margin.”
