Hippo attacks tourist, 'chews' him and drags him to the bottom of the river
In June 2024, Roland Cherry and his wife were on a safari in Zambia (Southern Africa) when their lives were turned upside down...
During their stay, the British tourists wanted to take part in a canoe safari to discover the region in a different way. Unfortunately, the experience quickly turned into a tragedy. While they were in their boat, a hippopotamus rushed towards them. Roland's wife was fortunately able to swim away from the canoe... Roland, who suffered a dislocated shoulder during the attack, was unable to move. The animal had managed to grab him.
"I was really like a duck sitting in water (...) The hippopotamus approached, grabbed me from below and took me to the bottom of the river before letting me go," Roland Cherry told Sky News, relayed by Midi Libre.
"I looked at my thigh, which was very badly chewed, and I could see flesh sticking out of my shorts, and I could see the blood on my left side as well. I thought to myself that I might die here tonight," Roland continued. It must be said that the mammal attacked the holidaymaker badly.
One of the doctors who treated the Briton said that he had "never met anyone who had survived a hippopotamus attack".
