Putin pulls the plug

Vladimir Putin is set to reduce the pay for Russian soldiers wounded on the Ukrainian battlefield as daily human losses continue to rise significantly.

A decree signed by the Russian president on Wednesday states that compensation will only be provided to injured soldiers and will be capped at 3 million rubles, or around 30,000 dollars. Depending on the severity of injuries, financial compensation will vary as the Kremlin seeks to cut costs. However, the law introduced in March 2022, which provides a compensation of 7.4 million rubles (approximately 75,000 dollars) to families of soldiers killed in action, remains in effect.

According to figures from Kyiv, Russia has lost over 700,000 troops in nearly two years of conflict, though these numbers have not been independently verified as Russia does not disclose its military losses.

This week, Washington confirmed that 10,000 North Korean soldiers are fighting alongside Russian forces in the Donetsk region.
