Putin invites 20 world leaders
Russian President Vladimir Putin is urgently seeking allies against the West. And the BRICS summit starting in Kazan, Russia, seems like the perfect occasion for that mission.
More than 20 world leaders are meeting there, and it is Russia's first major summit since the start of the war in Ukraine.
BRICS stands for the alliance of the world's emerging economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The group aims to promote development and cooperation. Earlier this year, the club expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Iran. And there appear to be many more countries in the queue to join the BRICS. Among them is Turkey, for example.
