NATO is not budging

NATO has shown no response after Volodymyr Zelenskyy unveiled his "victory plan" midweek in front of Ukrainian lawmakers.

The Ukrainian leader revealed that the plan involves Ukraine joining the military alliance through an expedited process, which would trigger NATO’s Article 5. This article states that all member states must defend an allied country under attack.

Mark Rutte, NATO's new Secretary General, did not endorse the plan but noted that NATO had taken it into consideration. He also did not mention any potential date for Ukraine’s membership.

"The plan has many aspects and many political and military issues we really need to hammer out with the Ukrainians to understand what is behind it, to see what we can do, what we cannot do," he said from Brussels.

The former Dutch Prime Minister reminded that Ukraine must first reclaim its territories before any negotiations can take place under better conditions.

"We are in close contact with allies, with Ukraine, to see how we can take next steps," he added.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy is expected to share more details with European leaders soon.
