Lithuania under threat as it strengthens its security arsenal

The Lithuanian government and German defense company Rheinmetall signed contracts on Friday to begin construction of a weapons factory in Lithuania.

Lithuania will manufacture 155-mm artillery ammunition from mid-2026, the Lithuanian Ministry of Economy and Innovation said in a statement.

A total of 180 million euros will be directly invested in the construction of the ammunition manufacturing plant in Lithuania, a NATO member state bordering Belarus and Russia.

According to the Ministry, some 150 jobs will be created in the country. The ammunition plant will be built on a 340-hectare site in the town of Baisogala, in central Lithuania.

For several years now, the Baltic states have been a regular target of Russia's war rhetoric.
