France will not bow to Putin

On Thursday, the heads of French and British diplomacy signed a joint declaration. Le Figaro reveals its contents.

France and the UK are adamant that they will not give the Russian president the opportunity to “rewrite the principles of international relations”. What's for more, the two countries will prevent him from “achieving his goals” in Ukraine.

Jean-Noël Barrot and David Lammy maintain their support for Kiev. “Together with our allies, we will make every effort to put Ukraine in the best possible position to achieve a just and lasting peace." In particular, they denounce “the return to the law of the strongest and the destruction of the security architecture that has ensured peace for generations”.

And the two ministers point out that “the war in Ukraine goes beyond the borders of Europe, and the whole world is being affected by this attempt at ‘Putinization’”. Together, they promise to fight “relentlessly against this campaign”. “No just and lasting peace can be achieved by violence or force”, they add. At a time when the world is fragmenting, the two allies propose a “coherent alternative”, “based on technological progress, international law and multilateral action”.
