China hits out at US over controversial decision
China has warned the United States after Joe Biden authorized Ukraine to use American ATACMS long-range missiles to strike targets directly on Russian soil.
Similarly, the British government has also given its approval for Ukrainian forces to deploy Storm Shadow missiles in Russia, with fragments of these weapons reportedly found this week according to the Kremlin.
Liu Pengyu, spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Washington, told Newsweek: "Realizing an early ceasefire and striving for political settlement serves the interests of all sides. It is important not to fuel the tension. China always encourages and supports all efforts conducive to the peaceful settlement of the crisis and stands ready to continue to play a constructive role in its own way for the political settlement of the Ukraine crisis."
Since the conflict began in February 2022, China has positioned itself as a neutral party, expressing a desire to mediate in the war between the neighboring countries.
Although Beijing has offered to act as a mediator, some Western nations have highlighted allegations that the Asian country may have supplied arms to Russia, though no evidence has been presented to support these claims.
Despite its neutrality, Xi Jinping has never condemned Russia's aggression in Ukraine but has urged Moscow to refrain from using nuclear weapons.
